It seamlessly bridged commerce and culture, inviting the public to experience the city's diverse ancestral histories and futuristic ecological visions through immersive AR.
Future Arts Way is a 2.5 mile interactive AR trail through Downtown Seattle.
Future Arts Way is an interactive, 2.5-mile augmented reality (AR) artwork trail that spans Downtown Seattle, linking the Pacific Science Center to King Street Station. Using a web-based mobile "Wayfinder" that requires no app downloads, visitors navigate the city to find more than 35 physical "AR Launchpad" vinyl drops placed on sidewalks and storefronts. Scanning these QR codes unlocks over 18 unique digital artworks, including a massive virtual waterfall cascading from a skybridge at 3rd & Pine. Designed to blend advanced technology with human-centric storytelling, the project serves as a bridge for community engagement, driving foot traffic directly into local independent businesses, galleries, and cultural hubs that act as stops along the trail.
The project's curatorial theme, Other Earth, reclaims the word "Other" to uplift historically marginalized Indigenous, Black, diasporic, and non-Western perspectives. The interactive installations merge Coast Salish botanical and ecological knowledge, Afrofuturism, virtual salmon migrations, and custom soundscapes to offer a multi-sensory exploration of the land's history and future. Through these layered digital narratives, Future Arts Way invites both locals and tourists to connect with Seattle's diverse cultural ancestry, celebrate biodiversity, and envision a future rooted in collective environmental stewardship and radical abundance.
